This was believed to be the first time the 9 hole Titiwangsa (Police) Golf Club, just off Jalan Tun Razak, has featured on the Cannons itinerary. Up until fairly recently it was a members only course with no walk-ins. And those who thought it might turn out to be a 'pitch adn putt doddle' were severely mistaken! The course was very wet underfoot and so played rather long - especially the 6th hole, which at 615 metres is the longest par 5 in Malaysia! The vistas around the course varied from stunning city skyline, to a birds-eye view of the police academy and on to the extensive sewerage works, replete with a horrid pong! The 9 of us put together some pretty dreadful golf. Winner was Sigi Maierbrugger with a gross 99 for 37 points, and cut 4 - his first Cannons win! Second OCB from Andrew and Reinli was Bernhard Romahn with a gross 100 for 27 points, and cut 1. A huge gap of 10 points between first and second! Lowest gross was John Laidley with 95 and Vincent Vijayan played the most golf with 121. The full gory details are as follows:
1. Sigi Maierbrugger - 99/37
2. Bernhard Romahn - 100/27
3. Reinli Tan - 102/27
4. Andrew Robinson - 98/27
5. John Laidley - 95/26
6. Hans Berger - 109/22
7. Ray Funnel - 110/22
8. Tom Holmes - 110/20
9. Vincent Vijayan - 121/17
Lunch was taken at the club and pretty awful it was too! Very slow service and poor food - although the rather senior looking policemen taking luncheon at a nearby table were being attended to promptly, funny that? And although there is plenty of beer in the club, it is only available in the enclosed air-conditioned bar which does not open until 16.30 hrs! When the bill came we were charged for 10 meals instead of 8, which led to the bill being recast and a further delay. Hans was not looking his normal vibrant self, adn refrained from solids due to an upset stomach following a dodgy tandoori the night before. And it bucketed down with rain as we left the club and we got snarled in city centre traffic jams. Opinions on the course varied - but the general feeling was that once or twice a year would more than suffice, but only in the dry seasons and with F&B taken elseware after the game. On the upside, it is right in the centre of town and compared to most courses we play there are significant savings in time, gas and tolls.
There was a RM20 carry over. (And PLEASE NOTE that the RM157 deficit from the previous week was generously borne by Ray RM100 and Andrew RM57).
Excitement is building as the inaugaral Cannons Xmas Lunch at the Coliseum Cafe & Hotel on Friday 10 December edges nearer. Vincent booked himself in and payed the requisite RM100 deposit. So we are now up to 14 punters, and hopeful of a few more..? The question of wearing antlers and full Santa outfits whilst swanning down Jalan TAR on the way to the Coli was hopefully dealt with in Mike's latest signal? And dont forget that sumptious accommodation is available at the Coli at very reasonable rates for the astute Cannon, who (heaven forbid!), overly imbibes on the day.
